BOZEMAN – February was one of the more extreme winter months we have seen in many years. In general, the month ranked in the top 5 coldest with average temperatures and in the top 10 snowiest in SW Montana.
This data is preliminary and has not been made official by NOAA so the numbers could change a little.
Bozeman MSU is ranked as the 4th coldest February on record with an average temperature of 11.8 degrees. The warmest high was 48 degrees back on February 2nd and the coldest low was -18 degrees below zero on February 7th. Total precipitation for the month was 1.61″ and that is 0.83″ above normal.
20 days in February came in below to well below average. Several days were as much as 37 degrees below normal on average.
Snow data: February snow totals 21.8″ and that is the 8th snowiest February on record. Look at how we are doing to date, records on snowfall begin on July 1st, so for the snow season (July 1st to February 28th) total is 75.9″. Normally for this time period we should have 57.1″. The departure from normal is 18.8″ above normal. However, record snow totals for the same period is 109″ in 2018. So not as impressive as last year but close.
