Wintry travel impacts again tonight into Wednesday

BOZEMAN – Wintry pattern will continue through the rest of the week. A strong cold front continues to track to the east and will exit Montana this evening. Behind this front a cold and snowy pattern will continue for several more days.

A stalled Low off the Oregon coast will keep an upper level trough over the region with colder air diving in from the North and moisture lifting in from the SW. The two combined will produce colder than normal temperatures and scattered snow showers.

Temperatures Tuesday afternoon did reach the lower 40s which has melted most of the snow from overnight but forecast highs Wednesday into Thursday are around freezing so I don’t expect too much snow melting for the next couple of days.

As the atmosphere warms slightly in the late afternoon hours Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday it will become unstable. This type of pattern will produce scattered snow showers with some banding producing intense short duration snow, lower visibility and accumulating snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a new Winter Weather Advisory for SW Montana now through noon on Wednesday.

Additional snow accumulations of 1”-3” are possible for lower valleys and 4”-8” of additional snow for most mountains and passes.

The National Weather Service continues a Winter Storm Warning for the backcountry regions between Gardiner and Cooke City.

Total snow accumulations with a week long snow event will likely add up to 1’ to 2’ feet of heavy wet snow in the Absaroka/Beartooth ranges.
