Late thunderstorms are likely for SW Montana

BOZEMAN – The atmosphere will become unstable Wednesday afternoon with strong surface heating and an approaching cold front. Both will add extra lift and produce scattered thunderstorms Wednesday late afternoon through early Thursday morning.

The Storm Prediction Center continues a “marginal” risk for stronger thunderstorms across most of the western and central half of Montana. Some storms could be strong enough to produce minor property damage with hail and outflow wind gusts.

Some storms could also produce brief heavy rainfall and all storms will produce considerable lightning.

The cold front will be passing out of our region by Thursday morning and cooler air will dig into SW Montana Thursday.

A new High-pressure ridge will build back of the state Friday into Saturday and with it a mostly dry and warm weather pattern. However, a new Pacific storm will begin to dig down into Montana producing a cooling trend with increasing showers and thunderstorms Sunday through Wednesday of next week.
