BOZEMAN – Unseasonably cold and wet for most of Montana this October. The last week of the month 2 arctic systems produced extremely cold temperatures and snow. Early estimates show that October across SW Montana will fall into the top 15 coldest on record and for some even in the top 5 coldest on record. Dillon is one city that will likely have the #1 coldest average temperature for October this year. Official reports will be compiled on Friday.
Forecast models and general trends in the atmosphere show very little change heading into early November for Montana. Cooler than normal temperatures will likely continue into the first full week of November and precipitation trends look a little more uncertain.
Ski resorts should have a fantastic opener in late November across SW Montana if these cooler than normal temperatures persist.
NEXT 2 WEATHER MAKERS
A Canadian clipper will drop through Montana Thursday into Friday. This is a very weak and disorganized disturbance, but it will produce scattered snow and gusty winds mostly east of the divide. For SW Montana mountain snow accumulations are likely with very little for most valley floors.
The next shot of moisture will come to Montana Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon. Ahead of this storm temperatures could moderate into the 40s Saturday and Sunday. Keep in mind that average highs this time of year are in the upper 40s to mid 50s.
Behind this second system temperatures will fall again next week. Forecast highs only in the 30s to very low 40s beginning Monday.
