BUTTE - Ask the volunteers at the Butte Emergency Food Bank if this is a busy time of year and they’ll tell you.
“Ooooooh, it’s a busy week! It’s huge for us,” said the food bank's director, Kathy Griffith.
Volunteers at the food bank, thanks to many generous donations from area businesses and people, have put together more than 900 Thanksgiving meals to be given out to many financially strapped families.
“I’m humbled, you know, here we are so blessed in our lives and you see people who are working hard and still can’t make ends work,” said Griffith.
Many of the food bank’s volunteers are older and retired, but they find the hard work of helping those in need very rewarding.
“And they come in and they cry, and it just breaks your heart and you do whatever you can to help them. And then it makes you feel better,” said volunteer Angelina Nicholls.
There’s a lot of boxes here. There’s a lot of lifting, a lot of bending. It’s physical work, and that’s why organizers want to encourage more young people to come out and volunteer.
“We’re looking for younger individuals. If they have time in the mornings and can come lift, especially, help us out that’d be great,” said Griffith.
The food bank is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.
