Montana Tech is partnering with a non-profit group in Butte to building an archway and trailhead to the Big Butte Open space recreation area just west of town.

“We want to support and enhance the recreational assets that we have in town,” said Jon Wick with the Butte Parks and Trails Foundation.

The Butte Parks and Trails Foundation received a $20,000 grant to build an archway to the public lands around Big Butte. Montana Tech will assist by constructing a roadway and a nine-space parking area at the trailhead located at the west end of Park Street.

The open space offers a wide range of outdoor activities.

“Mountain bike course, a mountain bike skills parks, a folf – Frisbee golf course – miles of walking biking trails,” said Beverly Hartline of Montana Tech.

Montana Tech said they were happy to partner with the city on this project because the trail system here is not only great for the community, it’s great for their students.

“The students love it, I mean, it’s wonderful, it’s something you can do between classes and burn of a little steam, I’m always seeing students on mountain bikes,” said Hartline.

The archway and parking area should be completed by this fall.
