Health officials added 129 new COVID-19 cases to the Montana Response COVID-19 tracking map, with 1,178 cases reported as active.

Note: Numbers reported by the state each day occasionally differ from those reported by county public health departments due to periodic lag times in reporting data to the state. MTN News counts the updated data individual counties report throughout a given day.

  • TOTAL CASES & RECOVERIES: There have now been 3,039 cumulative cases statewide, and 1,815 people have recovered from the virus.
  • HOSPITALIZATIONS: There are currently 56 patients hospitalized. There have been 191 hospitalizations due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

One new death was reported in Lake County and one death was reported in Yellowstone County. The Yellowstone County death was connected to the Billings care facility where a COVID-19 outbreak has now claimed the lives of 15 people. It was not immediately clear where the third death was reported.

Local health officials announced the first COVID-19 related death in the Mission Valley on Thursday morning.

Lake County Public Health reports that a man in his 70s died in a Flathead County hospital.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the first death of a Lake County resident from complications due to COVID-19," a social media post states.

On Wednesday, one of the deaths was reported in Yellowstone County. Here's the full press release from RiverStone Health:
Another COVID-19 related death occurred Tuesday in Yellowstone County.
RiverStone Health, Yellowstone County’s public health department, reports that a man in his 60s passed away Tuesday at his home.
To protect the privacy of the deceased and his family, RiverStone Health will release no further information.
This most recent death in Yellowstone County is reflected on today’s state COVID-19 tracking map. This man’s death brings the county’s total deaths related to COVID-19 to 19.
“The loss of another Yellowstone County person to this terrible disease affects all of us in our community,” said John Felton, Yellowstone County health officer and RiverStone Health president and CEO. “Our hearts go out to this man’s family and friends. I urge everyone to honor the memory of those we have lost by doing everything possible to prevent more people from becoming ill: Wear masks in public, wash your hands often, keep at least six feet away from people not in your household, and stay home if you are ill.”
To date, 756 Yellowstone County residents have been infected with COVID-19 and 482 cases were active as of Wednesday.
The second death on Wednesday was reported in Sweet Grass County. The patient was a male in his 80s who had been hospitalized, according to the Sweet Grass County Health Department. It was the first COVID-19 related death in that area.

Governor Steve Bullock announced on Wednesday a statewide directive requiring face coverings/masks in Montana. The directive is effective immediately in counties that have four or more active cases of COVID-19.

The directive requires that masks be used in most indoor settings and where social distancing cannot be maintained. Bullock said businesses will have the right to deny entry of anyone not wearing a mask.
