SANTA FE COUNTY, N.M. (KOAT) — Drivers could soon be paying more at the pump because of a proposed gas tax.
House Bill 6 is currently making its way through the Roundhouse.
It would charge drivers 10 cents more per gallon of gas.
The money would fund road improvements in the state.
“I think that’s something that, you know, is going to good, useful projects here in town or around the state, and I think we need it,” said Chris Pasarew. He told Action 7 News our state needs road improvements.
He said he’s driven through certain areas of Albuquerque and it’s rough on his vehicle. “I feel I am going to have to maintain my vehicle more often than I need to, and I think it’s important to have great roads,” Pasarew said.
But he does not believe taxpayers should foot the bill. Instead, he believes improvements should be funded by the federal government.
Olin Brown disagreed. He told Action 7 News he would not mind paying the extra money every time he fills up his tank.
“You drive around, and you see 20 to 30 cent variations and you go wherever is close. I think it all comes out in the wash so to speak, ” Brown said.
New Mexico has not raised its gas tax since 1993.
If the bill passed and is signed by the governor, it would take effect next summer.
House Bill 6 is scheduled to go before the Tax and Revenue Committee on Friday.
