Grand Island, NE (WOWT) — A multi-agency search in Howard County overnight led to the suspect of an officer-involved shooting incident being taken into custody.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Office was attempting a traffic stop north of Elba Monday night when the suspect engaged deputies with a handgun.
He was identified as Luke Lefever, 30, of Broken Bow.
Lefever was able to gain access to a sheriff’s vehicle during the altercation and fled. he also gained access to a shotgun in the cruiser.
The cruiser eventually spun out and gunfire was exchanged for a second time.
Lefever fled on foot and a search ensued.
Troopers and deputies from multiple counties alone with several police officers set up a perimeter. NSP SWAT and the NSP helicopter were also called in to help with the search.
The NSP helicopter was able to locate the suspect in a creek bed where SWAT was able to track him. A NSP K9 was deployed to take the man into custody.
Lefever was found with a gunshot wound in his left arm and was showing symptoms of hypothermia.
He was taken to the St. Paul hospital for treatment then transported by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.
The shotgun was found at the scene.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Charges for Lefever are pending while he is in custody at the hospital.
NSP is leading the investigation into the incident.
