Milwaukee, WI (WDJT) — A 12-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet while sleeping in his family’s Milwaukee apartment Tuesday morning.

According to police, the boy was hit by the bullet around 1 a.m. while sleeping in his bedroom near 24th and National.

Investigators determined a suspect had fired a gun from an adjoining apartment. The bullet went through the wall and into the child’s bedroom.

“It’s sad because I have kids of my own and there are too many innocent kids getting killed because of stupidity and it needs to stop,” said Jamia Childs, lives nearby.

The boy was taken to the hospital and is in good condition. Authorities are investigating the incident and are seeking suspects.

This comes two weeks after Sandra Parks, 13, was shot and killed by a stray bullet in her home. She was laid to rest last weekend.

On average, there are about 40 to 50 non-fatal shootings of children in Milwaukee. In 2018, there were 54 shootings, four were fatal.

“That’s unacceptable. I want Milwaukee to be a place where if a child is shot or injured as a result of gun violence that the full weight of the community and the full weight of the justice system addresses that issue. No child should fear being shot or killed, in their home, in their playground on the way to school in our city,” said Reggie Moore, Director of the Office of Violence Prevention.
