Pearl City, HI (KITV) — What would you do if you bought something at a garage sale, only to find out someone’s hidden items were inside, worth hundreds of dollars? Waianae resident Tammy Cabral was faced with that choice.
Her story starts on Saturday morning, when she stopped by a garage sale in Pearl City and purchased what she thought was a Christmas reindeer for $10. “I saw this big Christmas reindeer box and we have a Frosty the Snowman. My husband’s like, ‘Oh, he can keep Frosty company.”
To her surprise, when she brought it home, she opened the box to find no reindeer but a lot of someone’s personal items, including vintage coins from Las Vegas and pieces of jewelry. “A lot of valuable stuff, so I knew we had to take it back,” Cabral says.
Without hesitation, Cabral returned the items back to the home that same night. She says it’s about doing the right thing. “It was kind of like a treasure box. The whole time, I was excited, but I knew that it wasn’t mine and I was just trying to get it back.”
We stopped by the garage sale Sunday and discovered the items belonged to Myra Kamihara-Pablo’s late uncle. While the value of the items is unknown, she says Cabral’s good deed is priceless.
Kamihara-Pablo says, “Their thinking and their mindset is about being honest and trusting one another. I am so grateful for her and I thank her.”
