Clayton County, GA (WGCL) — Clayton County officials are investigating after a toddler succumbed to their injuries inflicted by a gunshot wound.

In a press conference held Thursday, officials say they responded to a home in the 300 block of Blackhawk Trail in Jonesboro in reference to a child shot.

Authorities say the child climbed into bed with his father who was sleep, and located a handgun that was hidden under the pillow on the bed. One shot was fired.

Clayton County EMS, administered lifesaving procedures, and transported him to a local area hospital, where he later died.

The initial investigation reveals that the shot was accidental and self-inflected; however, it is still an active and ongoing investigation.

The juvenile’s name is not being released at this time.
