Saluda, NC (WLOS) — It was a frightening wake-up call for a Polk County family Thursday morning. A huge tree came crashing down onto their home in Saluda, around 5:30 am.
News 13 was there as a friend of the family – who is also an arborist – came out to inspect the damage. The entire root ball of the tree came out of the ground and limbs demolished the roof.
Ice also came off of the tree when it fell.
The homeowners say it barely missed them while they were sleeping in their bedroom.
“It had actually come through the roof, pushed the ceiling down into the room. It was pretty awful. It missed my wife by three or four feet,” says homeowner Mark Gardner.
Thankfully, that couple and their two children are okay.
“I feel lucky for sure. I don’t know why things happen the way they do, but we were definitely lucky this morning,” adds Gardner.
They say now they are focusing on repairing the damage and finding somewhere else to stay Thursday night.
