Plattsmouth, Nebraska (KPTM) — “It’s degrading towards the opponent.”
That comment from Kaelie Stephens refers to a political mailer making its rounds in Plattsmouth. It shows a pig next to a candidate for Nebraska Legislature District Two. It accuses her of mud-slinging.
“It probably isn’t what you want to do to make yourself look like a good person,” said Stephens.
Around Plattsmouth Monday on the eve of Election Day, it raised eyebrows.
“It should not be involved,” said voter Megan Weatherby.
The mailer is paid for by Rob Clements for Legislature. It says so on the ad. Clements is the current District Two legislator appointed to the position by Governor Pete Ricketts last year. His opponent, Susan Lorence, calls the mailer offensive.
“I think that it’s just ugly.”
Lorence told FOX 42 News she was first made aware of the mailer about a week and a half ago. She says her supporters are just as stunned.
“We should be focused on the issues and not personal attacks.”
Lorence says she’s not sure where the mud-slinging accusation comes from. She says her campaign has been a positive one.
“Nebraskans are tired of the divisiveness,” said Lorence.
FOX 42 News reached out to State Senator Clements’ campaign requesting a comment about the mailer. We did not get a response about the ad, however, we did get a statement about the state senator’s record. That statement says Clements has invested in infrastructure, voted against a budget that would have raised the gas tax and will continue to defend values. The campaign accuses Lorence of leveling misleading attacks on the state senator’s record.
