Avondale, Arizona (KPHO/KTVK) — A man was arrested after police say he shot his older brother following an argument over food in Avondale late Sunday night.

The incident occurred at a home near the area of Encanto and Avondale boulevards.

When Avondale police officers arrived to the home, they found 46-year-old Anthony Murillo inside the garage.

Police say Murillo was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his right arm and the right side of his torso.

According to police, Murillo said that he was shot by his brother, 44-year-old John Murillo after the two were involved in an argument.

Anthony told officers that the two were fighting over food. Police added the two men were texting each other and that John had used Anthony’s “Tupperware-type dish.”

According to police, when Anthony returned home, he knocked on John’s bedroom door to confront him.

That’s when John fired some shots through the bedroom door, striking Anthony several times.

Police say John left the scene following the incident in a black vehicle.

Anthony was transferred to a local hospital in stable condition.

Meanwhile, John was later arrested at a nearby area.

When officers found John driving in the neighborhood, he admitted to officers that he shot his brother because “he was scared, he just reacted and wasn’t thinking.”

John added he was scared of Anthony because “he is a black belt and had threatened to hurt him.”

John was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for several charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct and unlawful discharge of firearm.

John’s bond is set at $20,000.
