ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Dozens stood in solidarity Sunday in downtown Asheville, with a message of equality for all people.
The Trump administration is considering a removal of the protections for transgender Americans, and Sunday marked an emotional day for some people at Pack Square.
Many people we spoke with in the trans community said they fear being erased, which is why many of them held signs in the rally, in hopes of fighting back.
The Department of Health and Human Services is spearheading an effort to establish a legal definition of sex under Title IX.
This means that once a person is defined as a male or female–which would be determined by their genitalia at birth–that definition of gender could not be changed.
It’s one of the reasons Cortne Roche chose to organize the rally.
“This isn’t the only thing that we can do, but it is the basis to forming connections with people in order to organize against laws like this from happening,” Roche said.
Roche believes this change in law would be a huge setback for her and for the trans community.
Two weeks from now, many in the community plan to gather again, for the National Trans Day of Remembrance.
