Authorities have released the name of a man who died in a weekend hunting accident in the Bitterroot.

Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton says 51-year-old Joseph Burgess of Corvallis died on Saturday morning in an area near Hamilton Heights Road east of Hamilton.

Sheriff Holton says that Burgess died as a result of an accidental gunshot injury sustained when a rifle was discharged inside a vehicle.

A hunting companion called 911 and the party drove to meet the responding first responders. Burgess was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Sheriff Holton says the manner of death has been ruled accidental.
