One teenager is dead, and two others remain in the hospital after a shooting outside of a high school in Des Moines, Iowa, police confirmed.

The shooting happened on Monday on the grounds of the city's East High School, but outside of a building, police said.

Police said in a statement, "Officers arrived to find three victims, all apparent teenagers, suffering from [sic] gunshot injury," police said. "Des Moines Fire Department medics transported the victims to local hospitals," CBS News reported.

A fire department spokesperson said the victims attended the high school and include a males and two females, according to the Des Moines Register. Police said the gunfire appears to have come from a passing vehicle.

Des Moines Fire Department spokesperson Ahman Douglass said the boy who did not survive was 15-years-old. The two others who were hospitalized include a 16-year-old female and an 18-year-old female.

Des Moines Superintendent Thomas Ahart said, “Our entire community is in mourning right now."

"It's sad, but we do train for this. We have to be prepared for it," said Des Moines Police Department Sgt. Paul Parizek. According to police, potential suspects have been detained, but no charges had been filed as of Monday night.

No motive for the shooting has been released. Agents from the Kansas City Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene to assist with the investigation.

Des Moines Public Schools said the high school was initially placed on lockdown. However, police gave it the "all clear" and students were dismissed on time, the district said.
