Officials with the Montana Veterans Affairs Health Care System are asking veterans to take additional precautions before entering VA clinics because of the coronavirus.

Veterans experiencing signs of fever, cough or shortness of breath should call 877-468-8387 and press 3 before visiting any VA hospital or clinic, VA officials said in a Tuesday news release.

Veterans can also sign in to MyHealtheVet to send a message to their doctor and set up a virtual appointment.

Employees are also being asked to stay home if they are experiencing a fever, cough or other symptoms of the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

These cautionary measure are being implemented at VA facilities nationwide.

VA officials emphasized that no one has tested positive for COVID-19 at any Montana facilities or elsewhere in the state.

Dr. Judy Hayman, executive director of the Montana Veterans Affairs Health Care System, said the agency has been coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and state public health officials to implement these guidelines.

Hayman also recommended handwashing, covering noses and mouths while sneezing and avoiding touch the face to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The CDC reported Tuesday 647 cases of COVID-19 and 25 deaths in 36 states nationwide. Visit the CDC website for more information on COVID-19.
