A teenager died following a late Tuesday night incident on Highway 10 west of Missoula.

A 16-year-old boy was driving with the female passenger on Highway 10 near Nine Mile Road between Frenchtown and Alberton when he pulled over at around 11:30 p.m., thinking he hit something at mile marker 4.9.

Both the driver and passenger then exited the vehicle. When the driver got back into the vehicle the girl was outside at the front of the car. The driver believed he was in reverse but accidentally drove forward over the female passenger. He then had to reverse to get the vehicle off the passenger.

The girl was pronounced dead on the scene. The name of the victim has not been released at this time. Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Sean Finley told MTN News that both of the teens were from Alberton.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
