A Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper was knocked unconscious Monday after his parked patrol vehicle was rear-ended by a sliding semi truck on the icy US Highway 212 west of Colony.

The highway patrol said in a Tuesday news release that the trooper was taken to a hospital in Spearfish, S.D., for treatment. His K-9 partner, who was also inside the vehicle, was not injured.

The trooper, who was not identified, was stopped on the shoulder attending to another crash when the eastbound semi jackknifed and smashed into the back of the patrol vehicle with the trailer, according to the news release.

A passing motorist called for assistance using the trooper's radio.

The semi driver was not injured.
