When you roll down Sheridan's Main Street, one of the first buildings you’ll see is Walter's Family Foods. They’ve been steadily supporting the Sheridan community since 1889. And with many senior citizens home bound during the coronavirus pandemic, store owner Shaleena Walter and her staff knew what had to be done.

“This is the third week I’ve picked up eggs and delivered them to the senior center," Walter said.

Rallying behind Shaleena and the rest of the Walter's staff is an outpouring of help from community members all across the Ruby Valley.

“We’ve had people donate toothpaste, toilet paper, we’ve had cash donations so we can put together food boxes for some of those shut-ins who need certain specific things," Walter said.

With safety being the number one priority, the Senior Center has commended the attention to caution and detail Walter's has put together to help them from outside their store walls.

“Not only has Walter's helped us with food, but we’ve teamed up with them to cut down the number of contaminating visits to our seniors," said Sheridan Senior Center Director Shirley Sand. "If our seniors call them before 10:30 (a.m.) they’ll pack up their groceries they’ve ordered and they’ll bring it here and we’ll deliver it the same time we deliver their meals.”

No matter how long the stay at home order continues for the state of Montana, the senior center will continue to provide an essential service to those most at risk.

“We’ll continue doing what we’re doing, handing out what we can, giving them meals," Sands adds.

You can get involved by dripping off donations at Walter's, and in particular they’re looking to stock up on Ensure.
