"Attainable housing" will soon be in Missoula in the form of a group living community.

The project, called Ponderosa Village , will be built on the corner of Pine and Scott streets which is currently an old industrial area.

Developers say the design -- which will consist of 46 bedroom pod-style units -- is gaining popularity in other areas with affordable housing issues.

The Missoula Redevelopment Agency is providing $96,000 of tax increment financing toward these new buildings.

Tod Gass said their role is to improve the right of way and add sidewalks and landscaping to the area.

"I think the rental units may be aimed at single people, probably from a wide range of ages. From a young professional to an older retiree that's looking for a little less upkeep."

The project will be two, three-story buildings with rooms in 250-square foot units that share a communal kitchen.

Rent and utilities will be around $600 a month and, the project is expected to open in June of 2021.
