Law enforcement warns about risks with warming car unattended

BOZEMAN — Dealing with the snow season can be challenging enough, and the Bozeman Police Department wants to remind drivers to be cautious this season as they leave their vehicle running and unattended to warm up.

Officers usually do see an uptick in car theft cases and other similar crimes around this time of the year.

Of course, it’s nice to rely on technology with push-to-start engines that turn off if the key isn’t in the vehicle and other anti-theft gadgets. But if you don’t have these things, officers say be careful because you do run the risks of someone taking off with your vehicle while you’re just trying to warm your car up.

Warming up your car up while it is unattended is not illegal here in Montana anymore. It used to be in 2017, according to Bozeman PD.
