The holidays can be a stressful time for pets.

Humane Society of Northwest Montana executive director Lori Heatherington tells MTN News that the holidays come with unique challenges for pets, including unfamiliar people and foods.

Heatherington says that that holiday foods like turkey, pies, and candies can be extremely dangerous if your pet eats them. She notes that the holiday treats often come with processed ingredients and fake sugars that can give your pet heart and stomach problems.

"You'll see that they recommend not to feed them the xylitols , so that's some of the sweeteners that people may be using. And you don't want to change the flora of your dog's stomach because then you're going to see a different output of which is going to require a great deal of cleaning," explained Heatherington.

Heatherington added that Flathead Pet Emergency is open on the holidays in case your pet needs immediate medical attention.
