BOZEMAN — While Chef Linda Huang is thousands of miles from where she grew up in China, she celebrates the Chinese New Year by bringing her authentic Chinese cooking to foodies in Bozeman.

“This is actually the saddest Chinese New Year in the last forty years. We are celebrating for our family in China which they cannot,” said Huang, a private chef at the Hummingbird’s Kitchen.

This year, news of the Coronavirus has Linda and her friends at the Bamboo Garden in Bozeman sympathetic and worried for those back at home.

“We realized the urgent need in China so we started trying to reach out to the whole community in Bozeman,” said Huang.

Linda and friends purchased thousands of masks, gloves and goggles from all around Bozeman and online, and sent them to a hospital in China in need of medical supplies.

“Right now, what we know is all America, almost throughout the whole world is a shortage of the mask.”

The group of women taking charge of the local fundraiser are all part of the Montana Chinese Association.

They say the donations and support from locals has been critical in helping get their first shipment sent out.

We’re all connected. As the Chinese, it doesn’t matter that you're living in China or that you’re overseas,” said Huang.

“We’re all together.”

A global mask shortage may delay the Montana Chinese Association’s next shipment to China, but the organization is still accepting donations.

All proceeds will go directly to those affected by the Coronavirus in China.
