BOZEMAN — A Bozeman man had his day in court Monday morning after he was arrested and charged with felony attempted burglary for trying to break down the door of a home while the family was inside sleeping.

In surveillance video captured by the home's doorbell, 42-year-old Joseph Murphy is seen kicking the door and trying to get inside a home off of Sourdough Road around 11 o’clock Saturday night.

The family spoke with our reporter off-camera and said they didn’t know Murphy and never had contact with him before that night.

When officers arrived at the home, they say they had to use a tazer on Murphy and he immediately “returned to a more normal state”.

The incident appears to have been a random act.

In court, Murphy’s defense said he suffered from bipolar disorder as well as PTSD.

Judge Bryan Adams set his bail at $15,000 and his next court appearance for August 7.
