BIG SKY, Mont. – Anyone visiting Big Sky on Saturday had the chance to take home a pumpkin of their choice by donating to the Big Sky Food Bank.
The Great Pumpkin Giveaway is the kickoff event for the Haunted Peaks Halloween Festival. Each year, the owners of the Lone Peak Cinema host Horrorfest at their movie theater to celebrate Halloween and the spookiness surrounding it.
As the years have gone by, an idea to turn the horror movie marathon into a full community event was born. Lone Peak owner Sally Fisher said helping the Food Bank was a top priority.
“This is a really important time of year to donate canned goods,” said Fisher. “Paper goods as well. A lot of people don’t realize it, but there are a lot of people in our area that are in need. There are a lot of kids that go to school hungry, so we are trying to stop that and stock the food bank and donate much as you can.”
In exchange for a donation, participants got to walk around Center Stage and pick a pumpkin. The sponsors of this event included Roxy’s Market, The Hungry Moose Market and Deli, The Country Market, The Big Sky Community Organization, and the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce.
“The kids started showing up early this morning, so I actually had some free helpers to help lay out all the pumpkins. Yeah, the kids have been excited about this all week; hopefully, we can keep this excitement going into next weekend too and just make Halloween a really fun time to be in Big Sky,” Fisher said.
Next weekend the festival will continue with a Halloween Block Party, a crowning for the best-carved pumpkin, and trick or treating events.
