For the first time in four years, the Montana State Horseshoe Championships is being hosted in Great Falls.

Although the event coordinators weren't sure this year's tournament would take place at all, 111 competitors -- 102 adults and 9 juniors -- signed up to compete.

Junior competitor Kayla Klundt said this year’s junior participation exceeded previous years by more than three times over.

“I think last year at state we only had 3 people, and a couple years ago we only had 2. So the 8 or 9 we had today is really good and we’re really happy with that,” Klundt said.

Klundt began throwing 5 years ago, a few years after her father began running the great falls horseshoe league: 3 for 3.

While the league interacts at the competitive level, they also care for each other on a familial level. “It’s like a big family down here,” Klundt said.

The highly-involved horseshoer hopes more juniors will join in future years, to ensure the future of competitive horseshoeing.

“We would like to get more juniors to go in because once the older people start not playing horseshoes and stuff, it kinda dies out. So that’s why we want more younger people in here to play,” Klundt said.
