Critical fire weather to impact Montana Tuesday into Wednesday

BOZEMAN – A high impact weather event is likely to hit SW Montana Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon.

The bottom line is new fire starts are likely!

Thunderstorms are likely to develop Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday afternoon. Thunderstorm activity will produce numerous lightning strikes and gusty outflow winds. Storms could be a mix of wet and dry.

Windy gusts over 40 mph are possible.

Relative humidity values: 10% to 15%.

Temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s.

FIRE WEATHER WATCH

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Tuesday afternoon and evening for the Bitterroot, Deer Lodge National Forests. This watch will likely be upgraded to a red flag warning.

RED FLAG WARNING

A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect for the Gallatin National Forest, Wheatland, Sweetgrass, Stillwater counties, and the Beartooth Ranger District of the Custer National Forest from noon to 9 pm Tuesday.

Impacts: Low humidity, hot temperatures, dry thunderstorms with gusty erratic wind gusts will create erratic fire behavior and possible new fire starts.

Thunderstorms are likely to develop around 3 pm Tuesday and push eastward. Thunderstorms are also possible in the overnight hours Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
