BELGRADE — A man shot at Belgrade Police officers Monday night when they responded to a disturbance on No. Hoffman Street in Belgrade.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 pm.

According to a press release, shortly after officers arrived on the scene, a man opened fire on officers from a second-story apartment window. A Belgrade Police car that the officers were sheltered behind was hit by gunfire. The 4-plex apartment unit is located near Belgrade High School. At least three windows in the apartment were broken out by the suspect, according to witnesses.

Neither officer was struck by gunfire. Officers and Deputies from the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Bozeman Police Department, and Montana Highway Patrol responded to assist the Belgrade officers.

A lengthy standoff ensued and the apartment was set on fire by the barricaded subject. Members of the Special Response Team were able to extinguish much of the fire and the subject was taken into custody without further incident. Firefighters from the Central Valley Fire District ensured the fire was fully extinguished. Several area residents are/were displaced as a result of these events.

Belgrade Police Detectives are currently investigating the matter. According to Belgrade Police Detective Dustin Lensing, this will be a time-intensive investigation and citizens are asked to avoid the area until it is complete as there will be road closures in the immediate area.

"We wish to thank our public safety partners listed above for all of their assistance in safely resolving this matter," Lensing said in the release.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
