University of Montana COVID-19 cases continue to rise

The COVID-19 numbers connected to the University of Montana continue to rise with almost 30 new cases reported in the last five days.

The Missoula City-County Health Department reported in a Monday update that there have been 28 new UM cases since last Thursday.

There are currently 46 active cases with an average of seven close contacts per case at the University of Montana.

Overall, there have been 57 cases tied to the University, including outbreaks reported in Greek Life and the athletic departments.

The health department originally planned to release UM's numbers every Wednesday but told MTN News they would revisit how frequently they report those should cases grow exponentially.

As of Monday there were 145 cases are active COVID-19 cases in Missoula County with almost 700 people considered as close contacts.

An additional 40 cases were reported over the weekend.

Missoula became the first major city in Montana to require the wearing of face coverings on July 9.

Local public health officials have released guidelines for high school sporting events on Aug. 28.
