Camp sites around Montana are set to reopen Friday, May 1.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks communication and education program manager Bob Gibson said Thursday fishing access and state park camping spots will open starting Friday.

The reopening of Montana camp sites comes after Gov. Steve Bullock announced phase one of the plan to reopen the state last week.

According to a U.S. Forest Service news release, developed recreation sites, including campgrounds, rental cabins, picnic areas and toilets in the Custer Gallatin National Forest will remain closed for the next few weeks.

The Forest Service will continue preparing and training employees and contractors to meet cleaning and disinfecting standards and ensuring it has the necessary cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment on hand, according to the release.

These sites are expected to begin reopening May 15, and will have hosts on site to ensure proper cleaning standards are met.

Gibson said two FWP camp sites in Montana are undergoing construction currently and will remain closed. In addition, Bannack State Park and Smith River will also remain closed. Bannack has not received a scheduled reopen date and Smith River will open in a week.

Gibson said that while camp sites reopen, the main offices will remain closed and people will need to continue to purchase their licenses and boat decals online.
