BOZEMAN – Family Promise and the Salvation Army are teaming up once again to collect school supplies for children in the Gallatin Valley who are in need.
Kids going back to school, and all of the shopping needs that come with it, will come quicker than we think. Family Promise and The Salvation Army are thinking ahead for families in need.
"For a lot of families in this valley they find it a burden. It’s supposed to be a super exciting time of year, going school supply shopping and for some it just isn’t," said Kara Meier, family case manager at Family Promise.
Last year, Family Promise and Salvation Army collected 200 backpacks and filled them with school supplies. This year they’re hoping to make 300.
“I think it helps to empower kids. It’s just such a great opportunity for the community to get involved and other kids to get involved and do some school shopping for not only themselves but kids who really need it," Meier said. "It gives kids in the Valley the opportunity to come and be able to have that excitement and get the school supplies that they need before school starts.”
Collection bins are at local churches and Bridger Family Dentistry. Locations and supply lists for schools can be found on the Family Promise website.
The organizations are collecting supplies until August 12, and the Salvation Army will host a free carnival to distribute the supplies on August 18.
“Last year families had to apply; they don’t this year. So they can just show up and grab their school supplies and have a little fun,” Meier said.
