BOZEMAN – With high temperatures and wind rolling in, the risk of fire danger is increasing.

Bozeman Fire Chief Josh Waldo said with the wet spring and amount of moisture Montana has gotten over this last winter and spring, vegetation is growing high and fast. This vegetation can dry up and be the perfect fuel for fires.

One of the tips Waldo has to prevent fires near your property is to clear brush back a minimum of 20 feet.

"Just be proactive, don’t wait until the fire starts or there is fire in the areas. Now is the time to be prepared. That defendable space, clearing away firewood that you are not using that is up next to your home, vegetation that’s grown up through the spring, now is the time to start taking those measures. Not when a fire has actually occurred," said Waldo.

Waldo also reminded people who start fires of their own to make sure they are completely extinguished when finished.
