GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – Glacier National Park crews have been plowing the Going-To-The-Sun Road since the beginning of April but it could still be months before crews are nearing completion.
An annual snow survey conducted near Logan Creek in late February showed that the most snow in over 30 years has been recorded — and that includes years of heavy snow like the winter of 1997.
As plows move up the Going-to-the-Sun Road, avalanche forecasters and technicians are monitoring the snowpack for possible avalanches to provide for crew safety as the plows keep moving up Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Visitors hiking or biking up historic roadway should continue to be alert to the possibility of avalanches, which are common in spring during periods of intense or prolonged warmups.
Glacier National Park spokeswoman Lauren Alley says last week side crews plowed the Going-to-the-Sun Road between Lake McDonald Lodge and Avalanche.
"Now that the crews have plowed between Lake McDonald Lodge and Avalanche that stretch of road is looking pretty good and even further up the road as they go further up is cleared of ice," Alley told MTN News.
"It’s a fun time in the spring to get your road bike out and head up there or if you have small children to give them their first opportunity of riding along a road without any vehicles on it," she added.
There is no final word on when the road will officially open to traffic but typically it opens in late-June or early July.
