Jefferson County High School hosted its third annual one-mile Color Fun Run in Boulder for Mariah’s Challenge.

The money raised from the run goes towards the Mariah Daye McCarthy Scholarship Fund Award to high school students who pledge to avoid drinking alcohol and getting in a car with someone who is under the influence throughout their middle and high school careers.

Mariah Daye McCarthy was killed in October of 2007 in Butte by an underage driver who had been drinking.

The original message to not drink and drive was geared towards youth in Butte but then spread to different schools around the area.

Andrea Dolezal is a board member for Mariah’s Challenge in Boulder.

"I don’t want to bury my kids. I don’t want anyone to bury their kids so I think this is important," Dolezal said. "Important to instill in our youth."

Jefferson County High School students Quinn Mann and Kaitlyn Workman said they accepted Mariah’s Challenge.

"It’s such a big deal in Montana because we have so many deaths by drunk drivers and all that and so I just think it’s a really good cause to stand behind, to not drink and drive," Workman said.

Mariah’s Challenge’s commitment includes not receiving any MIPs or DUIs and provides credibility to challenge their peers to do the same.

Colleen Teeling, another board member, said Mariah Daye McCarthy’s father, Leo McCarthy is proud of his daughter’s legacy and the community for embracing Mariah’s Challenge.

"The biggest thing for us is to keep them safe and help them make the right choices and decisions and go in the direction they are going to live a long life, as Leo McCarthy said, we want them to grow old," Teeling said.

About 40 people registered for the Fun Run and over $1,600 was raised for the scholarship fund.
