Shodair Children’s Hospital held a Youth Suicide Prevention Summit and invited a group of professionals within the mental health field to address Montana’s high teenager suicide rate on Tuesday.
Questions were presented to the officials about their community’s mental health status as well the health status in public schools and youth groups.
Some speakers talked about collaborations with foundations around the state, legislatures, and more.
"To bring all these minds and passions together is such an important and huge step moving forward," Moffie Funk, a Democrat Representative for Helena, said.
Superintendent of East Helena Public Schools Ron Whitmoyer said that developing networks is crucial.
"The more networks that we can develop today with other community members, the stronger we will be as a group and the better services we will be able to deliver not only to the child but all people in our community," Whitmoyer said.
An Out of the Darkness Campus Walk for suicide prevention is scheduled for April 28 at 2 p.m. The walk will start at the East Helena City Hall parking lot.
Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death overall in Montana. Montana is ranked third nationally for suicides.
