Saturday marked the sixth year for young men and women who are part of packs, troops, and crews of the Boy Scouts to collect food in the Helena Valley.

The groups collected donated non-perishable goods left on the doorsteps of homes in participating neighborhoods.

Every year, about 2,000 bags are distributed to homes in Helena, Montana City, and Clancy.

"It doesn’t surprise me when people in Helena and this community come together and support the food drive and support the people in need with food," Boy Scout John Duffy said.

This is Duffy’s third year collecting food for Helena Food Share.

"Making a difference in your community is really a big part of what Boy Scouts is," said Boy Scout Dallas Grubb.

The troops left the collected food bags at Safeway and then loaded the goods into Helena Food Share’s truck.

"It makes me feel really good that people who might not have enough food will be able to get this food and it’s also kind of uplifting that if you ask people to help, they will give so much," Venturing Boy Scout member Marina Ittner said.

More than 3,000 pounds of food is collected and about 70 Boy Scouts and adults participate each year to support Helena Food Share.
