Do you remember the first car you ever fell in love with? For most of us, it was that smiling Little Tykes “Cozy Coupe” red and yellow toy car, powered by our own little feet. If you’re still harboring some affection for the little vehicle — even now that you’re all grown up — have we found something for you!
England-based brothers John and Geof Bitmead created the “Toytown Coupe” in their mechanic shop Attitude Autos. It’s a motorized, road-legal (in the U.K.), adult-sized version of the toy car. The brothers used a small hatchback called the Daewoo Matiz (known in the U.S. as the Chevy Spark) as the foundation for their grown-up-size version of the Little Tikes Crazy Coupe.
According to a BBC report, the car can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.
Watch the fun here in this YouTube video of the BBC News segment:
The car is about the size of a golf cart and there’s no windshield or window glass, but the little vehicle does come with airbags, mirrors, headlights and a gas tank.
And it sure is eye-catching! Look at the brightly colored car in this photo from the Attitude Autos Facebook page, posted in 2015:
The tiny vehicle has even earned a Guinness World Record! The organization recognized the Bitmead brothers for having invented the largest Cozy Coupe.
Check out the official certificate in this Facebook post from 2016:
“Receiving the world record for the car was an incredible rush that is hard to put into words,” John Bitmead told Romper. “To go from being just a piece of fun that causes a stir to actually holding a global record title was utterly astounding.”
While this innovative auto is full of whimsy and wonder, it’s not being mass-produced, so unfortunately, we can’t go buy one off the lot (much as we wish we could!). According to the eBay Motors blog, the “one-of-a-kind piece of automotive history” sold on eBay U.K. for the equivalent to around $33,000.
What would you pay for an adult-size version of this beloved piece of childhood nostalgia?
