GALLATIN CANYON — Rivers are running high and that’s making for dangerous conditions on Montana’s waterways.
It is also forcing the closure of some fishing access sites to all but foot traffic.
Morgan Jacobsen notes that water levels are near the top of House Rock on the Gallatin River, a good indicator of high flow. He told MTN’s Chet Layman that submerged debris, swift currents and near freezing water temperatures all make for potentially deadly river conditions right now. He suggested during the Montana This Morning This Week in Fish and Wildlife segment that folks should take this time to explore some of the area lakes and avoid the raging rivers for the next couple weeks.
If that isn’t an option FWP has closed several area fishing access sites to all but foot traffic. They are: The Four Corners Fishing Access Site (FAS) on the Gallatin River. Closure on the Yellowstone include: Carter's Bridge FAS, Mallard's Rest FAS, Grey Owl FAS, and Emigrant FAS. Again, these sites are currently only open to walk-in traffic.
