DURANGO, Colo. (KMGH) — The Hinsdale County Sheriff and his family, who were injured when an avalanche crashed into their house last week, have a new place to call home.
An anonymous family has donated a house in the town of Lake City to Hinsdale County Sheriff Justin Casey and his two children as long as the family needs it, according to an update posted to a GoFundMe page established to help the family.
Casey and his two daughters have been recovering from injuries they suffered after an avalanche destroyed their mountain home, located outside Lake City, in the early morning hours of March 12.
The Hinsdale County Administrator’s Office says it took about 15 first responders an hour to locate all three victims who were in the home when the slide hit and get them to a hospital.
“The Casey’s are in pretty good spirits considering everything that they have gone through. Justin is on crutches and will likely be on them for a while. Sara is doing amazing and Christy is still hurting and not very mobile,” read a GoFundMe announcement posted by Andy Dozier on Friday.
About 15 nearby homes and a subdivision were evacuated as a precaution after the March 12 slide.
