ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KOAT) — For 10-year-old Vincent Foster, getting to shop for a Halloween costume with some of Albuquerque’s finest was exciting. Fire Station 5 gave away 300 free costumes to families in need in less than 12 hours.
For Vincent’s mom, it was a weight lifted off her shoulders.
“Christmas is coming around the corner so it’s just kind of hard right now, so it helped us out financially to not have to worry about the costumes,” Ariana Kim said.
The costumes are just half of the story. Station 5 is also turning the place into a haunted house.
Firefighters have been working round-the-clock to make it happen.
“We are not professional set dressers here at AFR but we are giving it our all,” Lt. Will McMullen said.
Residents usually see firefighters on the worst day of their lives, so for McMullen interactions like these boost morale for the department.
As well as the kids.
“Thank you to the people who donated the costumes and thank you to the firefighters who gave out the costumes and saved the day!” Foster said.
The haunted house and a carnival will be open on Halloween from 5 to 9 p.m., at 123 Dallas St. Southeast.
These firefighters saved the day a different way, one costume and haunted house at a time.
