Spanish Fort, AL (WALA) — Police said a man was taken into custody after he was seen walking around naked near Rockwell Elementary School in Spanish Fort.
Investigators said the man was involved in a crash on Highway 31 about one-third of a mile away from the school. After the wreck, the man didn’t stop and continued to drive down the road.
Police said he eventually stopped and got out of the vehicle, but he wasn’t wearing any clothes. The nude man then started walking back and forth on Highway 31 until police officers arrived.
Several witnesses were working on utilities relocation right where the accident happened and saw the whole scene play out. They said police were on the scene quickly, but not before they saw much more than they wanted. John Cunningham took some pictures and described what he saw.
“Right here past my Dodge here, it hit a van over here by this little sign by the church. He sped off on to go into this Professional Collision body shop and by the time he got there, he got out of his car and he was buck naked man,” Cunningham said. “It just made my day and so me and Dave were down the and all of a sudden, the police were here in no time. He started walking back this way and he also started walking back the other way, kind of like he didn’t know where he was.”
When officers arrived, they detained the man until an ambulance arrived. Police said the man appeared to be in an altered mental state. Spanish Ft. Police Chief, David Edgar said officers used a taser to subdue the man, but did shoot him with it.
He was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Charges against the man are pending, including leaving the scene of an accident and disorderly conduct.
Police said no one was hurt in the crash and the naked man was never on the Rockwell Elementary campus. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
