ST. CLAIR COUNTY, MO (KMOV) — An officer in the Metro East is dead after falling over the on-ramp leading up to the Poplar Street Bridge Saturday evening, according to Illinois State Police.

Ricardo Davis, an officer with the Washington Park police department, was pronounced dead Saturday night just before 11 p.m. from injuries he sustained from falling from an on-ramp of the Poplar Street Bridge.

Police said Davis attempted to stop a silver Chevrolet Traverse on Interstate 64 near Washington Park just 5 p.m. when the driver took off.

The SUV traveled westbound on Interstate 64 before crashing into the complex of the Poplar Street Bridge.

According to a preliminary investigation, officers began to struggle with two suspects near the bridge. While trying to detain both suspects, Davis fell over the on-ramp barrier.
Authorities are working to determine if Davis fell on his own or if he was pushed.

Illinois State Police say Officer Davis was 44.

Authorities took both suspects into custody.
