KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV/KSMO) — A group of teens is in the hospital after they had to be pulled from a vehicle as it was in flames.
Firefighters were called about 8:15 a.m. near Smart and Jackson avenues.
There were four people in the car when it crashed. At least one was wearing their seatbelt. Two are in critical condition, and two are in serious condition at local hospitals.
Investigators believe everyone inside the car are teenagers.
Police say a silver Hyundai was going west on Smart Avenue when it flew off the road, smashed into a retaining wall, hit a tree and then stopped after colliding with a house. The car then caught fire.
Emergency crews worked together to put out the fire and get the people out safely. The house has been assessed for damaged.
“The owner was not home at the time. We’ve been in contact with them since then though. House took a little bit of damage but nothing structural and it can be inhabited,” Sgt. Bill Mahoney said.
Police say speed may have played a role in the crash. At this point, they say no other cars were involved.
