STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga (WGCL) — Just a few feet from where children walk to and from school on Halwick Way in Stone Mountain, there’s an abandoned home which has many parents in the neighborhood on edge.

“It’s definitely not safe especially if there is the potential of people being inside the house with it being abandoned for so long,” said neighbor Channing Statham.

Channing Statham said she’s concerned for her daughter’s safety because the rundown property is across the street from Rockbridge Elementary School and has become a magnet for crime.

“I feel it’s something that should be addressed immediately, as soon as possible especially if there are things going on within the residence,” said Statham.

CBS46 contacted the investment firm which owns the property and they sent out a crew on Monday to clean-up some of the trash and debris around the home.

“They had me to come out and trim the bushes and remove all the debris from around the house,” said maintenance man Lorenzo Faust.

Even the maintenance worker agreed something needed to be done for the safety of the neighborhood.

“An easy target for people that are loitering or doing drugs or whatever they may do,” said Faust.

It’s uncertain what the long-term plan will be to improve the property, but everyone including the kids believe the clean-up is a step in the right direction.

“They should actually dedicate more time and money into the house with either putting it up for sale or I would say put it up for sale at this point. Ha, ha. And let someone else take it over that can actually take care of the property,” said Statham.

Tax records show that Willowdale Investments in Duluth owns the property, but when CBS46 contacted the company we learned they’re operating under a different name called All Best Properties Management. We spoke with the owner and she assured us they will clean-up and secure the property, but would not elaborate on whether they will sell or demolish the home.
