WASHINGTON PARK, Mo. (KMOV) — A Metro East woman says it cost her hundreds of dollars to get her car back from a towing company after it was stolen in Washington Park.
Sometime early Tuesday, a thief stole the Hyundai Sonata that Vonique Jackson received when her grandmother died. The thief crashed the car the same day and totaled it.
Jackson did not drive the car or insure it but planned to sell it to help pay for a wheelchair accessible van to drive around her disabled mother.
After four days, she was told by Satisfied Towing that she would have to pay $600 to get the car back.
“I just can’t afford that. I’m taking care of my mom and she’s on a fixed income and that doesn’t even cover her medication,” said Jackson.
News 4 learned from Satisfied Towing that extra fees were added because the car had to be winced out of a ditch but that the bill wasn’t as high as first thought. The tow yard said it did not know Jackson was a crime victim and agreed to help.
“So if she were to come today, it is $420 but you know I don’t have a problem with that. The airbags deployed, it’s not fixable, so if she wants it, that’s fine. She can bring me $300 and I’ll take it,” said an employee of Satisfied Towing.
Even with the reduced fee, Jackson will not be getting her car back because the car isn’t insured. She also will not be compensated for being a crime victim.
