Roseville, CA (KCRA) — An emotional memorial service took place Saturday morning in Roseville for slain Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Stasyuk.
Stasyuk, 27, was killed while responding to a call earlier this month at an auto parts store in Rancho Cordova. He is survived by a wife, mother, father and sister.
The service at Bayside Church Adventure Campus on Stanford Ranch Road was attended by more than 1,200 uniformed officers from around the country.
Speakers included pastors, Sheriff Scott Jones and Stasyuk’s wife, Amy. They spoke of his work ethic and kindness.
During the memorial service, Amy Stasyuk read a heartfelt letter to her husband.
“I am so thankful you chose me to be part of your life,” she said, recounting her first date with Stasyuk.
“That day was truly perfect. Something I never got a chance to tell you … was that when I got back into my car, I sat there for a few minutes, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is the real thing.'”
The couple was married just six months ago. Stasyuk’s best man from his wedding also spoke at the memorial.
“When asked to save a life of a woman, a stranger, from a horrible accident, Mark said yes,” said Dominic Troncale. “When asked to respond to a call of a parent unable to control their disobedient teenager, Mark said yes. When asked to run toward gunfire, when everyone else is running away, Mark said yes. And then we asked Mark the ultimate question.”
A limited number of seats or standing room-only places were available to the community, officials said.
A procession left the church following the ceremony.
