DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — A Des Moines dad is behind bars and accused of driving drunk with three children unsecured in the back seat.
Police pulled over 36-year-old Bita Amisi near 63rd Street and Hickman Road. They said he had slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and smelled of alcohol.
Court documents show the children, ages 5, 7 and 11, were “crawling around on the back seat” without any seat belts on.
Brandi Thompson, Iowa’s state child passenger safety coordinator, said this could have ended much worse.
“It’s really heart-wrenching. It definitely pulls at the heartstrings,” Thompson said. “It’s just really hard when kids don’t always have a voice for themselves and need someone to take charge of that situation for them.”
Not only is drinking and driving illegal, but Thompson said so is not having children secured in a seat belt.
